The Malaga Atarazanas (Market Hall) is located in an old shipyard dating back to the 14th Century. It was built in Moorish Nasrid times, and construction began in 1354. The building itself is a great visit because of its history and architecture. The stalls inside, will make your mouth water? guaranteed!
If you come from Plaza Constitucion, you'll find the market located to your right at calle Atarazanas. It is surrounded by stores and narrow streets and it's on the way towards El Corte Ingl?s. Lift your eyes above street level and you'll find it immediately. After your first visit, you?ll most likely become a regular customer as the food is absolutely amazing. History of the Atarazanas building
The building was first created as a shipyard, during those times the coast of Malaga reached that level. This means that all of Alameda Principal, the SOHO district and the Ferris wheel was underwater during those times. Over a century after construction, after the city was conquered by the Christians, the Atarazanas building was used for many purposes. It was used as a convent, a warehouse, a hospital, military barracks and even as a school.
In 1870 the local government refurbished the old building, keeping only one horseshoe-shaped arch as the main entrance, located on the south side of the building. This is now the grand Moorish door at the fa?ade. Unfortunately the rest of the seven-arch building was demolished due to its poor condition.
The new building was built in steel and stained glass, in Arabic style, in an attempt to honor its origins. This new construction was intended to house a modern and spacious market to accommodate the needs of the growing Malaga population.
Fresh local products
Inside the Atarazanas, you will find an array of stalls selling the best selection of local products available. Beautiful fresh produce from local growers, the best fish in the city, butchers, cheeses, dried fruits and nuts, olives, spices, etc. Anything and everything to make a delicious meal in your holiday apartment or to take back home and indulge.
The products in the market are a feast for the eyes and nose, and prices are fair for the high quality products you can get there. The best part is that you can actually try many of the products sold, there are sample platters at many stalls. Perfect for the curious and hungry visitors.
It would be hard to visit the Atarazanas and not buy something (especially if you try the samples). I can never go in and out of the market?without buying some fruit, spices or?something else that catches my eye. The best part is that if you get hungry during the tour, a few stalls have kitchens and cook and serve what they have on display. Great for a healthy breakfast of toast with cured ham, fresh squeezed orange juice and a coffee. For lunch try the grilled prawns, octopus or seafood skewers. Delicious!
The Atarazanas Market is open Mondays through Saturdays from 8:00 to 15:00.
